ERP Old-New effect 1 Running head: THE ERP OLD-NEW EFFECT IN SHORT-TERM MEMORY Characterizing the ERP Old-New effect in a short-term memory task

چکیده
The early and late components of the event-related potential (ERP) Old-New effect are well characterized with respect to long-term memory, and have been associated with processes of familiarity and recollection, respectively. Now, using a short-term memory paradigm with verbal and non-verbal stimuli we explored the way that these two components respond to variation in recency and stimulus type. We found that the amplitude of the early component (or frontal N400, FN400) showed Old-New effects only for verbal stimuli, and increased with recency. In contrast, the later component (or late positive component, LPC) showed Old-New effects across a range of stimulus types, and did not scale with recency. These results are consistent with the way that these same ERP components have been characterized in longterm memory, supporting the idea that some of the same processes underlie longand shortterm item recognition. متن کاملEffects of Pre-Encoding Stress on Brain Correlates Associated with the Long-Term Memory for Emotional Scenes
Recent animal and human research indicates that stress around the time of encoding enhances long-term memory for emotionally arousing events but neural evidence remains unclear. In the present study we used the ERP old/new effect to investigate brain dynamics underlying the long-term effects of acute pre-encoding stress on memory for emotional and neutral scenes. Participants were exposed eithe...
متن کاملEffects of task-set adoption on ERP correlates of controlled and automatic recognition memory
Successful memory retrieval depends not only on memory fidelity but also on the mental preparedness on the part of the subject. ERP studies of recognition memory have identified two topographically distinct ERP components, the FN400 old/new effect and the late posterior component (LPC) old/new effect, commonly associated with familiarity and recollection, respectively. Here we used a task-switc...
متن کاملColor and context: an ERP study on intrinsic and extrinsic feature binding in episodic memory.
Episodic memory for intrinsic item and extrinsic context information is postulated to rely on two distinct types of representation: object and episodic tokens. These provide the basis for familiarity and recollection, respectively. Electrophysiological indices of these processes (ERP old-new effects) were used together with behavioral data to test these assumptions. We manipulated an intrinsic ...
متن کاملERP old/new effects at different retention intervals in recency discrimination tasks.
Recognition memory studies have suggested that event-related brain potentials (ERPs) may tap into several different memory processes. In particular, two ERP components have been hypothesized as related to familiarity (FN400 old/new effect, 300-500 ms, anterior) and recollection processes (parietal old/new effect, 400-800 ms, posterior). The functional significance of the FN400 old/new effect is...
